Etidronic Acid Properties

Etidronic Acid (HEDP) is a phosphonic acid-based chelating agent with the following characteristics:

Solubility: Highly soluble in water and strong acids (e.g., HCl, H₂SO₄), slightly soluble in organic solvents.

Stability:Chemically stable in acidic and alkaline conditions (pH 1–14). Resists thermal decomposition up to 200°C, making it suitable for high-temperature applications.

Functionality:Strong chelation of metal ions (Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, Fe³⁺) even in low concentrations. Inhibits scale formation and corrosion, particularly in hard water systems.

Etidronic Acid Applications

As a high-performance scale and corrosion inhibitor, HEDP is widely used in:

1. Water Treatment

Cooling/Boiler Systems: Prevents CaCO₃ and Ca₃(PO₄)₂ scaling at dosages of 1–10 ppm.

RO Membranes: Extends lifespan by reducing metal fouling.

2. Industrial Cleaning

Acid Cleaning (HCl/H₂SO₄):

Added at 0.1–0.5% to protect metals (e.g., steel, copper) while removing rust/scale.

Aluminum Etching: Compatible with phosphoric acid to prevent over-corrosion.

3. Oilfield Chemistry

Scale Inhibition: Controls BaSO₄/SrSO₄ deposition in brine water (up to 80°C).

4. Personal Care

Stabilizer in Cosmetics: Binds metal ions to prevent oxidation in shampoos (FDA-approved).
