Properties:
Ethylene carbonate (EC) is a cyclic carbonate that exists as a colorless, transparent crystal (melting point 36-38°C) or liquid at room temperature. Its molecules are highly polar and possess an extremely high dielectric constant, effectively promoting the dissociation of lithium salts. Furthermore, EC exhibits a wide electrochemical window, good thermal and chemical stability, making it a fundamental solvent for ideal lithium-ion battery electrolytes.
Application:
EC is primarily used as a solvent in lithium-ion battery electrolytes, often mixed with low-viscosity solvents (such as DMC and EMC) to form an electrolyte system that combines high ionic conductivity with excellent film-forming ability. It preferentially reduces to form a stable and dense solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film on the graphite anode surface, which is crucial for battery performance and lifespan. In addition, EC is also used as an intermediate in the synthesis of polymers such as polycarbonate.
