Properties:
Lithium hexafluorophosphate is a white crystalline or powdery substance at room temperature and is extremely hygroscopic. It dissolves rapidly in water and many organic solvents (such as methanol, ethanol, and carbonates). However, this material is extremely sensitive to the environment—once exposed to air, it rapidly absorbs moisture and decomposes, releasing corrosive phosphorus pentafluoride and producing white fumes. Therefore, companies must store it strictly in a sealed, cool, and dry environment.
Application:
Lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6) remains the best-performing electrolyte salt to date, irreplaceable. It exhibits high solubility and conductivity in non-aqueous solvents, enabling it to synergistically form a stable SEI film on the carbon anode while maintaining stability with the cathode material. Therefore, manufacturers widely use it in power batteries, energy storage batteries, and digital batteries. It accounts for as much as 43% of the electrolyte cost, highlighting its crucial role.
