Properties:
When strong Lewis acids such as boron trifluoride (BF3), phosphorus pentafluoride, and arsenic pentafluoride are dissolved, the acidity becomes stronger because stable complex acids are generated: H[CF3SO3BF3], H[CF3SO3PF5], and H[CF3SO3AsF5]. Trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (TfOH) emits smoke in the air and easily absorbs water to form a monohydrate. It is very soluble in water, and the melt water releases a large amount of heat, hydrolyzing to form trifluoromethane (CHF3) and sulfuric acid. Trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (TfOH) can react with phosphorus pentoxide under heating conditions to obtain trifluoromethanesulfonic anhydride (similarly, concentrated sulfuric acid and phosphorus pentoxide react to obtain sulfur trioxide)
Application:
It has a wide range of uses and is the strongest known organic acid. It is a universal synthetic tool. It is highly corrosive and hygroscopic and is widely used in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries, such as nucleosides, antibiotics, steroids, proteins, glycosides, vitamin synthesis, silicone rubber modification, etc.
