Lithium Hexafluorophosphate (LiPF₆, CAS 21324-40-3): The Benchmark Electrolyte Salt for Lithium-ion Batteries

Spread the love

Introduction

Lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF₆)is the most widely used lithium salt in lithium-ion battery electrolytes. It has set the industry benchmark for conductivity, electrochemical stability, and compatibility with both electrodes and separators.
At Hainan Sincere Industries Co., Ltd., we supply battery-grade LiPF₆ to global manufacturers and R&D institutes, ensuring stable quality and reliable delivery for applications from consumer electronics to electric vehicles.

What is LiPF6?

LiPF₆ is an inorganic salt composed of lithium cations (Li⁺) and hexafluorophosphate anions (PF₆⁻).
When dissolved in carbonate-based solvents, it forms electrolytes with:

  • High ionic conductivity in the typical battery temperature range.

  • Excellent compatibility with aluminum current collectors.

  • Stable SEI formation on graphite anodes.

  • Good solubility in common carbonate mixtures such as EC, DEC, and EMC.

However, LiPF₆ is moisture-sensitive and can hydrolyze to form HF, so high-purity production and moisture control are essential.

Common Applications & Research Focus

1. Standard Li-ion cell production
LiPF₆ in EC/DEC or EC/EMC mixtures remains the standard for most cylindrical, prismatic, and pouch Li-ion cells. It offers balanced conductivity, stability, and manufacturability.

2. High-voltage cathodes
With proper additives (e.g., FEC, VC, LiBOB), LiPF₆ supports cathodes operating up to 4.3–4.4 V. The stable aluminum passivation from PF₆⁻ is critical for these systems.

3. Additive synergy and co-salt formulations
LiPF₆ often serves as a co-salt with LiFSI, LiDFOB, or LiTFSI. This combination can improve low-temperature performance, cycling life, and high-voltage tolerance while preserving Al stability.

4. Safety-oriented formulations
Researchers use flame-retardant solvents (e.g., TFEP) or ionic liquids with LiPF₆ to reduce flammability without sacrificing conductivity.

5. Specialized electrolyte research
LiPF₆ remains the reference salt in academic studies on SEI formation, electrolyte degradation, and interphase engineering—ensuring results are comparable across laboratories.
